A medical doctor may prescribe painkillers and anti-inflammatories and recommend traction. As a last resort you may be referred to a surgeon, surgery will only be an option if the cause of the sciatica is a slipped disc. First an x-ray will be taken, then, while under a general anesthetic, the fragments of the disc will be removed through a small cut in the back.

Some doctors will also refer patients to physiotherapists or chiropractics/osteopaths. Physiotherapists will usually treat sciatica with heat pads and the use of electrical stimulation of the back muscles. Chiropractics or Osteopaths will use manipulations to try and relieve the pressure on the sciatic nerve and restore spinal movement.

There are also alternative therapies recommended for treating sciatica these include acupuncture and/or acupressure, yoga & hypnosis. Acupuncture is a therapy that dates back thousands of years ago. It originated in China and the belief system behind it is that all illnesses are caused by a blockage in the chi which is your life force and moves around your body. The practitioner will take very fine needles and insert them at certain points in your body to unblock the problem thus relieving your pain. Some medical doctors are now also practicing acupuncture and will increase the effectiveness by attaching the needles to a machine that causes electrical stimulation (this can feel a little strange, but not uncomfortable). Acupressure is based on the same principles as acupuncture but without using needles. The points are instead massaged by the practitioner. Personally I do not find this method as effective, but if you have a fear of needles it may be a good option.

Yoga is an ancient Hindu system of stretching exercises performed to enhance the mind and body connection and well being. It’s very important to mention to the instructor before your lesson if you suffer from Sciatica as some of the stretches can be harmful. One of the common causes of sciatica is created when the piriformis muscle puts pressure on the sciatic nerve some yoga stretches can help to stretch this muscle and ease the pain.

People have been referred to hypnotherapists for sciatica as well, I’m not sure how it helps sciatica specifically but hypnosis seems to put you in such a deep state of relaxation that it changes your brain wave patterns to reduce & manage pain more effectively.

The best form of treatment for sciatica by far is prevention. A most important thing is regular exercise especially exercise that helps core strength such as Pilates. Also good posture is vital to prevent a sciatic flare-up’. Trying to maintain a healthy weight is also a good idea. Correct posture when lifting or carrying objects is essential keeping your back straight, bending at your knees and carrying things close to your body. Also listen to your grandmother and stop sitting with your legs crossed as this position can cause pressure on the sciatic nerve. Lastly a good supportive mattress is essential.

They really don’t offer you any long term pain relief. They work on the idea of making you happy enough to pay them while you’re having it done, but not cure it, so you’ll always have to come back. That’s what the whole issue is about. I’m going to share with you the current methods that I don’t think are good solutions and what I think really works.

Here is a list of the most common treatments for sciatica:

  • Acupuncture – A new age method of sticking needles in various places on your body. The science on this is very sketchy and it doesn’t offer a long term solution. You’ll have to get treatment repeatedly for the rest of your life.

  • Anti-inflammatory Medication – This is what I describe as “numbing the pain”. It doesn’t really address the problem, but to get you on pills that you’ll have to take for the rest of your life. That means they’re going to earn a nice income on your misery.

  • Chiropractic – Most people that go to these guys swear by them. All I know is that you’re good one day and the next you could be suffering from even more pain than you had before. All I know is that it is expensive and you’ll be getting treatment on a regular basis for a long time.

  • Surgery – I wouldn’t recommend this solution because it’s just far to dangerous. If you’ve tried everything and you feel this is your last method, than I say good luck. I don’t like the idea of cutting you open to remove nerves in the back area around the spine. It’s just too risky.

The solutions are obviously nothing long term or just right out dangerous. I think physical therapy for sciatica pain relief is the most important. The fact is that you can just easily do most of these things from home. Doing a few simple stretches and exercises can relax the muscle tension on your nerves, which will relieve the pain. That’s all it takes.
