Looking for Pain Relief in Arthritis

4885370530 905d71cf16 m Looking for Pain Relief in Arthritis

To look for pain relief from Arthritis is a hard thing to do. The Doctors can give you pain killers, and they also can give you anti inflammatory drugs to help the pain. And to be able to find something that will give natural arthritis pain relief is even harder. There are many weird and wonderful items on the market for all illnesses, and I guess if someone is in pain they will take anything to get that pain relief.

Most people know about Arthritis, and they know how painful it can be for the patient, and if you look at Rheumatoid Arthritis things are even worse.

The Doctors know about these two diseases, although Im not convinced that they know what causes it, or how to cure it. Up to quite recently its been left to the drug companies to provide the relief from pain, but thanks to medical science that is all changing.

What medical science has produced is not something that can be bought from a chemist, or can it be prescribed by your Doctor, yet it has made a tremendous amount of difference to patients already.

This remarkable turnaround is almost a completely different type of life style where your diet is the main thing to alter. We have to stop eating foods that cause the problems in the first place. When you think of things like pollution and over use of chemicals its no wonder we have problems.

By sticking a diet of fresh fruit and vegetables and by cutting out acidic foods like meat, and fast foods, and sugar based products like sweets, biscuits, chocolate we will all feel so much better as the bodys natural defence system can then work properly to cure out ills and pain.

The are many ailments that can be cured like this, and it has been proved that things like Parkinsons, Alzheimers, Gout, Cancer, Eczema, Asthma, Psoriasis, and many more can be reversed where the patient once more can lead a normal life again without the misery and the suffering.

Please note that I am not a Doctor, or any way allied to the Medical profession, and I would always advise you to talk things through with your Doctor. I am not qualified to give you medical advice, and the only thing I am doing is passing information on that I have read about.

If you are suffering badly you might want to talk things through with your own Doctor, or maybe in some cases you might not have faith in him anymore. That decision is up to you, but I do advise that you enlist the help of a good nutritionist how can make sure you are getting the right vitamins for a healthy balanced diet.

Sciatica and Acupuncture

5001818725 c0c45221dd m Sciatica and Acupuncture

Nothing is so painful as a sciatica nerve that is acting up. There is relief for sciatica and acupuncture is one way to get it.

Sciatica and Acupuncture

Sciatica is the name given to a painful condition that is characterized by pain that begins in the lower back and moves down the large sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back and down the back of the leg. There are several causes for this condition including inflammation of the nerve itself. In some cases, the condition is caused by overexertion, and sometimes it is caused by putting too much pressure on the nerve simply by sitting in a poor position.

The good news is that sciatica usually clears up on its own after a period of time. In a few rare cases, the condition becomes chronic. In most cases, the chronic conditions can be traced to actual traumatic damage to the lower back or spine or to the nerve itself. The treatment is usually centered on relief of the pain. Pain killers are given and rest is suggested.

Sciatica responds very well to acupuncture. Acupuncture has a very good record for the relief of unspecific pain and the reduction of inflammation. In fact, sciatica and acupuncture make such a good condition and treatment match that some people find that they can bring about some pain relief and quicker healing times with the mere application of acupressure to the correct points.

Sciatica is one of those ailments that really does seem to call for the use of alternative medicines. It is often treated by chiropractors as well as physical therapists. What makes acupuncture such a good choice for the treatment is that the diagnosis method of Traditional Chinese Medicine will look well past the pain, which it will see as merely a symptom, to the underlying cause. This will suggest a program of treatment that will include relief of pain and increased healing, but will also address an overall plan of diet, exercise, and herbal supplements designed to prevent its return.

Since most incidents of sciatica are not life threatening nor are they usually of long duration, the taking of chemical pain killers that might have side effects does not seem to be the most logical choice to one who cares about the overall health of his body. Acupuncture for the treatment of sciatica has the advantage of being safe and the virtually lack of adverse side effects seems to point to it as a saner choice.

Pain | Shoulder Pain Relief for Injuries & Degeneration Pain

4134439936 0abcb16862 m Pain | Shoulder Pain Relief for Injuries & Degeneration Pain

Did you know that according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, over four million Americans seek relief from shoulder pain each year? This number may sound alarming to you, but the fact of the matter is the shoulder is one of the most movable joints in the body, therefore making it one of the most potentially unstable.

The correct relief form pain plan can be determined depending upon what kind of injury or condition you experience. Only your doctor can decide which shoulder relief plan is best for you. Most shoulder pain problems are attributed to two things:

1) Injuries and/or Overuse
2) Degeneration of the tendons, joints and tissues

Shoulder Pain Relief for Injuries & Overuse

Many people who injure their shoulders need immediate relief from the pain. Injuries, such as a dislocated shoulder and a shoulder separation can be extremely painful.

* Dislocated Shoulder. When the arm is pulled backward and overwhelms the muscles, dislocation and pain can occur. If you dislocate your shoulder, in addition to the pain, you will notice a lot of swelling and bruising. It might feel numb and weak, as well. To receive relief from the pain from a dislocated shoulder, a doctor must push the ball of the humerus back into the socket joint. Then, you must wear a sling to rest your shoulder to heal and mitigate your pain.

* Shoulder Separation. Shoulder separation occurs when the ligaments that hold the collarbone to the shoulder blade are completely torn. Relief from a separation is simple: your arm among other prescribed treatments must remain in a sling until it heals.

People who suffer from either one of the aforementioned injuries can find immediate shoulder relief from pain by applying ice to the wounded area for up to 20 minutes three times a day.

Your doctor will more than likely prescribe pain killers in order to receive even more relief. Physical therapy in many cases will also be recommended. One word of advice, keep moving your shoulder ever so slightly or you run the risk of frozen shoulder which is a whole different scenario to deal with.

Shoulder Pain Relief for Degeneration of the Tendons, Joints & Tissues

Many times, people seek relief from shoulder injury due to the wear and tear of the tendons, joints and tissues. Tendonitis, arthritis and bursitis are common problems that cause inflammation and great amounts of pain. Most of the time, folks can find pain relief by taking Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (Advil).

The first step to achieve shoulder pain relief is to visit your doctor. Your doctor will lead you in the right direction toward the pain relief you need.

Herbal Remedies for Toothache

There are a number of different things which may cause you to experience toothache. Generally, the factors that contribute to toothache are all related to dental problems. They may include, but are not limited to: a dental abscess, gum disease, impaction, cavities, problems with the tooth root, or a cracked tooth. When you get these problems fixed, you will often find that your toothache will go away. If you are currently unable to have the problem fixed, you may feel hopeless about curing your pain due to a toothache. Keep in mind that there are other ways to relieve pain caused by a toothache, aside from taking pain killers.

Home Remedies for Toothache

Soak a cotton ball in clove oil and put it in the area where you are experiencing the pain. Leave it in your mouth as long as you feel the need to. Make sure that you do not do it while you sleep. If you are pregnant, diabetic or have a blood or kidney disorder, avoid this home remedy. Do this whenever you experience pain.

Apply a piece of raw onion to the tooth or area of the mouth that is experiencing the most pain. Leave it in as long as you deem necessary, but do not fall asleep with it in your mouth. Do this when you experience pain.

Put several pieces of ice into a plastic bag and use it as a cold compress for your mouth. Keep in mind that a frozen bag of vegetables, such as peas, may work out better. The reason is because they can conform to the shape of your mouth easier than ice cubes can and they are still cold enough to help provide relief. Do this several times daily.

Allow yourself to put a piece of ice in your mouth, next to the tooth. Make sure that you do not bite down on the ice, which may cause tooth chipping and further pain. You can do this several times daily.

Use a hot tea bag that you will press either against the tooth itself or outside the mouth. The heat should soothe the pain. Do this whenever you experience pain.

Apply about three to four drops of vanilla extract to the specific tooth or area of the mouth. This should help relieve your pain very quickly. Do this once to twice daily.

Put a dab of Vicks Vapor Rub outside on the area of the mouth that hurts. Do this when you experience pain.

Gargle with a salt water mixture. If it does not irritate your mouth, you may also want to gargle with Listerine or another antiseptic. A peroxide water mixture can also be tried out. You can gargle as much as you feel you can handle it.

Consider putting a cough drop that contains antiseptic into your mouth. It may relieve your pain.

New Treatment Brings Sciatica Symptom Relief

Sciatica symptom relief has been hard to come by for many sciatica sufferers, but a new treatment option is now available that brings fast relief with a minimal risk of side effects to the vast majority of sciatica sufferers.

Sciatica (commonly misspelled as syatica) is an irritation of the sciatic nerve which is formed by nerves that arise in the low back. Most cases of sciatica are caused by herniations or bulges of one or more spinal discs. The spinal discs are soft tissue structures that separate the spinal bones (the vertebrae) and act as shock absorbers.

When a spinal disc is damaged through a single injury or multiple small injuries over time, the outer wall of the disc may not be able to contain the pressure from within and the disc bulges outward into the canals where the spinal nerves exit the spine. This results in compression and irritation of the nerves, which often produces sciatica that begins in the buttock muscles and may travel downward across the back of the leg to the bottom of the foot.

The treatment options for sciatica symptom relief vary depending on the case. The first line of sciatica treatment is usually medication to reduce pain and inflammation. Muscle relaxers may also be prescribed to reduce muscle spasm. Medication may be effective enough to provide relief short-term until inflammation subsides and/or the disc stabilizes. In more severe cases, oral medication may not be effective, and some patients may not be able to tolerate the common side effects of anti-inflammatory drugs and/or the diminished mental alertness seen with pain killers and muscle relaxers.

Steroid injections are often the next line of sciatica symptom relief treatment, and they are used to try to reduce inflammation around the discs and spinal nerves. While steroid injections often provide relief short-term, the long-term effects are less favorable. Due to the fact that the main effect of steroid injections is to reduce inflammation, once those effects wear off, inflammation and the resulting pressure on the nerves often builds up again, and symptoms return. Steroid shots come with a number of side-effects including bone thinning, damage to soft tissues, and suppression of immune function, so doctors limit the amount of steroids used in order to avoid adverse health effects from the treatment.

Surgical treatment is often suggested for sciatica sufferers, and in a few cases it may be the only real option. Surgery has a poor track record (about a 50% success rate overall), and in some cases, symptoms may worsen following surgery. Complications of surgery include problems from post-surgical scar tissue formation and increased stress on adjacent spinal discs which may result in additional problems with other discs in the years following surgery.

Fortunately, there is a new option in sciatica symptom relief that has a high success rate and a very low risk of side-effects. Spinal decompression is a new, advanced form of spinal traction that uses special computerized traction motors to gently and slowly apply a decompressive force to the spine, reducing pressure in the spinal discs. Spinal decompression systems can comfortably create negative pressure (suction) within the spinal discs that can pull disc bulges and herniations back in and away from sensitive nerve structures, as well as increase disc hydration and nutrition to help with disc healing. Unlike the old forms of spinal traction which could be painful due to the traction pull triggering muscle spasm, spinal decompression systems monitor and respond to the body to keep muscles relaxed so the treatment is comfortable and effective.

Preliminary studies have shown a success rate for spinal decompression of 80 to 90%, with the beneficial effects holding up well over the long-term. The one-year recurrence rate post-treatment is less than 5%. While spinal decompression is not appropriate for everyone with sciatica and is not effective in every case, it does represent a big improvement in sciatica treatment.

Sciatica treatment – Part 3

Treatment for the pain of sciatica is usually two fold: Treatment for the pain is necessary and treatment is necessary for the condition itself. In a few cases, where increased weakness or acute and prolonged pain is present, surgery may be the alternative, but that depends a variety of factors and has its own set of complications.

Self-care is the most common form of treatment and works for most patients. At the onset of pain, bed rest may be necessary, but prolonged bed rest is not advisable, and according to experts, may worsen the condition.

Self Care: Relief can be obtained for many with the use of mild pain killers found in aspirin and acetaminophens. The downside is that if too many are taken, there is a ceiling to the benefit that can be obtained from them and, taken in excess, they can cause bleeding, ulcers of the stomach and liver problems.

Anti-inflammatory medication my be prescribed by your doctor in the form of muscle relaxers, anti-depressants and anticonvulsant drugs.

Cold packs may be prescribed and hot packs applied (48 hours after onset) to the area of inflammation giving temporary relief from pain.

Physical Therapy and Aggressive Methods: Rehabilitation through physical therapy is often prescribed as part of treatment. Physical therapy helps in strengthening the muscles, correcting posture and improving flexibility.

Exercise and strength training are very helpful in preventing degenerative changes.

Stretching exercises can be done at home and they help in a big way to loosen and give flexibility to the muscles. These exercises increase the range of motion, improve circulation and relieve stress; all of which help in the relief of pain. Exercise also helps in the production of endorphins, the body’s natural pain blocker.

Aggressive methods of treatment include epidural steroid injections. The corticosteroid is injected into the infected area to suppress inflammation. These injections have side effects and there is a limit to the number of injections a patient can receive; usually up to 3 per year.

Surgery: If there is significant weakness or pain does not respond to other methods of treatment surgery may be needed. Also if there is incontinence in the bladder or bowel that signals a loss of sensation in the body, surgery may be performed.

Possible complication from surgery includes infection, bleeding injury to the nerve or spinal cord. It does not stop the degenerative changes of the spinal cord.

Complementary Medicine: Acupuncture is recognized by research scientists as efficient in relieving pain. Acupressure works on the same principles, but uses specific pressure points in its therapy, instead of needles. Chiropractic adjustments to the spine yield effective pain treatment for acute back pain in some patients.

Hypnosis: Deep relaxation and mind suggestion apparently lessens the patient’s perception of pain.

There are a variety of treatments available but care should be exercised in all treatments and especially in those that the doctor has not prescribed for you. Exercise and/or physical therapy usually works best with medicine prescriptions.

Should you have an epidural or natural childbirth? – Part 1

3661881240 63b59e5e43 m Should you have an epidural or natural childbirth? Part 1

I had my daughter four years ago in a private hospital, the only private hospital here. This was because I had heard so many nightmare stories of childbirth in the government hospitals which are free for citizens of my country. I wanted a natural birth with normal pain killers but not epidural. I always thought of myself as the kind of person who could endure a great amount of pain. I was in for a real shock!

I went through my first four hours of labour quite well. The fifth hour started to really hurt. The pain is undescribable and my respect goes out to all the mothers out there! By this fifth hour I was contracting every two minutes and the nurse kept telling me I was doing very well and that it would all soon be over. This gave me some comfort. Then five hours became nine hours and nothing had happened. Despite the contractions, I was still only two centimetres dilated and the pain was horrendous. I remember turning to my husband and telling him that I did not think I would be able to make it through. He went a ghastly white and left the labour room for a few minutes. My family told me that he had burst into tears, regained his composure and came back in to be with me.

This was when the doctor offered me the epidural. being in the state I was, I agreed without another thought. Despite the long awaited blissful pain relief, i regretted making the decision. I fell asleep and my contractions slowed down. By hour thirteen, I was still only three centimetres dilated. This maybe could have still occured if I had not opted for the epidural. I will never know. However, what happened next was the irregular heartbeat of my daughter which caused alarm thus leading to a consequent emergency cesaerian. I was lucky to have a healthy bouncing baby girl weighing in at 3.555kgs. However she had had some infection and needed to be on antibiotics for a week.

The reason why I am writing for the natural birth is that four years later, I still have a bruised pain in the area where the epidural was inserted and I am unable to lift heavy items for a long period of time. I learnt only later that these were some of the side effects of the epidural. There are many other more, such as not knowing when to push when dilation is full, thus suffocating the child.

Next time round, I will have to grit my teeth and bear with the pain and go for a natural birth. Hopefully the next time round, labour will not be another thirteen hours!

Sciatica Treatment – Part 1

In most people, self care measures is usually recommended a sciatica treatment as this usually responds well. Continuing with your usual activities but avoiding the original factor that aggravated your sciatica pain in the first place will help you to heal more quickly. Even though it seems like a few days of bed rest may provide some relief, any more then this is not a good idea. Inactivity will make your symptoms worse over time.

In addition to self care sciatica treatment, try some of the following:

Cold Packs: Cold packs help to reduce inflammation and relieve some of the discomfort. In a clean towel, wrap an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas and apply to the affected areas for fifteen to twenty minutes four times per day.

Hot Packs: After 48 hours have passed, apply heat to the affected areas. Warm packs or a heating pad on the lowest setting should help to alleviate some of the pain. Try to alternate warm and cold packs if you continue to have pain.

Stretching: When stretching initially after your sciatica flare up, stick to passive stretching and avoid jerking motions including bouncing or twisting.

Over The Counter Medication: There are two categories of pain killers. The first one only relieves pain. The second type of pain killer relieves pain as well as treats inflammation. These are called Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Products such as aspirin, ibuprofen and acetaminophen products such as Tylenol can help to relieve sciatica pain. These can provide real pain relief but there is a limit to how much pain can be controlled. This is known as the ceiling effect – exceeding the recommended dosage wont provide better results. Worse though is that these NSAIDS are known to cause side effects in some people such as nausea, stomach bleeding or ulcers. Acetaminophen has been known to cause liver problems if taken in excess. If you use these medications on a regular basis talk to you health care professional so that you can be monitored for problems associated with prolonged usage. If you are exercising, stretching or following another sciatica treatment program you should periodically re-evaluate if you still require these NSAIDS for pain management.

Prescription Drugs: A muscle relaxant along with anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed by your health care professional. In some cases of chronic pain anticonvulsant and tricyclic antidepressant drugs may also be prescribed. By blocking the pain messages being sent to your brain or enhancing the bodies production of endorphins, pain symptoms can sometimes be handled this way. Your bodies natural painkillers are called endorphins.

Physical Therapy: Physical therapy can play an important part in your recovery from a herniated disk. When your condition improves your physical therapist can work with you to help design a rehabilitation program that will help you prevent the same injury in the future.

Regular Exercise: When you injure yourself you think that movement or exercise would be counterproductive and all you want to do is just lay down and rest until the pain goes away. The truth is that regular exercise is the best way to combat many ailments, including chronic discomfort. When you exercise your body releases endorphins. Endorphins are the chemical that prevent pain signals from reaching your brain and can also help to fight against anxiety and depression. Your pain may be more difficult to control if you suffer from either depression or anxiety.

In most circumstances conservative sciatica treatment is tried for three to six months. When conservative sciatica treatment fails to alleviate your pain more aggressive sciatica treatment options are usually attempted.

Epidural Steroid Injections: An injection of a corticosteroid medication to the affected area may be helpful in some instances. If taken in doses that exceed your natural levels, inflammation is suppressed relieving painful symptoms caused by the pressure of the inflammation. Most effective when used in conjunction with a sciatica treatment rehabilitation program. Because of the serious side effects that corticosteroid injections can cause, the number of injections you can receive in a year is usually limited to no more then three.

Surgery: Surgery is most often a last resort and left until the compressed nerve causes significant weakness, loss of bowel or bladder control, or if the pain itself is progressing and conventional sciatica treatment is not working. Most often surgery is preformed as a sciatica treatment to remove a portion of a herniated disk that is pressing on a nerve. The goal is to preserve as mush of the normal anatomy as possible, leaving as much of the disk intact as possible.
