Is My Joint Pain Caused By Arthritis?

Each type of arthritis disease (there are over one hundred), has a particular list of causes, symptoms, and intervention methods. Amongst all the variations of the condition, pain is the symptom reported most often. Learning how to manage pain is key for an arthritis sufferer. Although maintaining a healthy weight and even loosing a few pounds, if you are overweight can help to lessen the strain on painful joints. A healthy diet of fresh fruits, vegetables and oily fish is said to help with many forms of arthritis. Some suffers claim that health supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate have been a great help in easing their condition.

When it comes to dealing with arthritis pain, at least you can rest assured in knowing that there are a lot of options available to you out there. Start taking one of the softer forms of treatment and then move on to harder medication if necessary. This means using over-the-counter pain medications such as Tylenol and Aspirin, those which many of us already use on a regular basis. Sometimes, the painful symptoms caused by the disease can be treated successfully with this medication.

It might be worth trying health supplements such as glucosamine or chondroitin sulphate or fish oils before you resort to prescription drugs. Glucosamine and chondroitin are found naturally in the body and help to build and repair cartilage and to give it elasticity although most supplements on the market are made from fish cartilage so this would not be advisable if you have an allergy to shellfish.

When more pain relief is required, creams and gels applied directly onto the skin may be more successful. Arthritic conditions such as tired, inflamed joints and muscles can be treated very capably with creams. Some of the arthritis creams on the market today contain the active ingredient salicylate, while others are based more around capsaicin or menthol, both which work extremely well also. The most powerful arthritis pain relief of all is arthritis medication, and this can only be prescribed to you by a general practitioner.

Often, the drug prescribed is an analgesic. Even those with allergies and stomach problems are safe to take these drugs and the pain relief they offer is effective. Acetaminophen, a superbly effective and affordable drug, is the analgesic prescribed most frequently. A combination of acetaminophen and codeine is highly established at relieving pain and could be recommended if the patient’s pain becomes extreme. The authority of a general practitioner should be sought before taking this.

The drug that works for you may take some time to find but when you do, it will be worth the delay. Stick to your doctor’s recommended dosage, maintain communication with them and keep them informed of how the treatment is developing.

Close to 70 million people, suffer from arthritis. Such an astonishing number if you ask me but if you think that’s a lot then you haven’t seen anything yet. The Center for Disease Control estimates that by 2030 there will be another 22 million added to that list with the aging baby boomer’s on the rise who will soon discover the pain of chronic inflammation.

We are told that exercise is good for us but who can enjoy a walk, jog, tennis or golf with your knees, hips, and shoulders so sore. It’s no wonder we turn to drugs for relief. Of course, with all the side effects of prescription drugs we might as well be defeating the purpose. Therefore, instead of taking prescription drugs and risking dangerous side effects, you might want to consider natural or home remedies to relieve your arthritis. Don’t forget, home remedies have not been scientifically proven but with the dangerous side effects of prescription drugs, home remedies may be a better way to relieve the pain. It is recommended to go by trial and error because what might work for some, may not work for others.

You are what you eat

Some people say that eating gin soaked raisins have provided miraculous relief for their pain, while others say that this remedy is worthless. The best thing to do with these remedies is to experiment with them until you find the one that works best for you.

Most of us have heard the phrase, “You are what you eat” and according to researchers from Tuft University, this may be true for arthritis. It has been proven that Omega 3-fatty acids found primarily in fish but are also in flaxseeds, pecans, walnuts, tofu, and green leafy vegetables help fight inflammation. Common omega 6-fatty acids that are found in oils such as, corn, sunflower, and sallflower may actually worsen inflammation and joint pain. Research suggests having at least six servings a day of produce to get the recommended daily dose of Vitamin C and Beta- carotene. It is also recommended substituting fish, beans, and nuts for meat. Vitamin D and fish oil supplements may also be helpful for those who do not like fish. These foods seem to provide anti-inflammatory nutrients that will help relieve joint pain. It has also been said that chocolate and tomatoes may trigger pain for sensitive individuals. You do not have to quit eating these foods but you should watch out for or limit foods that trigger your pain.

Pain relief guide

Co-codamol

Due to the road traffic accident I was recently in I have been prescribed these painkillers, these can be bought at the chemist with advise from the dispensary and also prescribed by your doctor.

I advise you to see your doctor before taking these as they are very strong painkillers and can affect you in certain ways if your taking other medicines at the same time.

Co-coda mol come in different strengths 8/500mg 30/500mg and other s which you can buy from the chemist which I do not really know about as I am on prescription medicine at the moment.

I have been prescribed 30/500mg which means there are 30mg of codeine phosphate in the tablets and 500 mg of paracetamol in each tablet. They come in packets of 30 and are to be taken one or two four times a day, but this is only what I have been prescribed and your doctor will advise you on the dosage of the tablets you have to take as each ailment has to be treated separately with advise from the doctor. I would not recommend you going out and buying these for a headache as they are very strong and I find I space off into a daydream like state a few minutes after taking them, as they relax the muscles I have injured in the car accident and also take the pain away.

I am not allowed to drive or operate machinery whilst on these tablets as I probably would end up hurting myself or someone else.

Codeine belongs to the opiod analgesic group of medicine and helps to relieve pain whilst paracetamol is a non opioid analgesic which relieves pain and reduces fever.

The weaker tablets can be taken for period pains, headaches, migraines and toothache whilst the stronger prescription drugs are for more severe pain.

You shouldn’t take these if you have had a head injury, or are an alcoholic, or suffer from asthma or bronchitis.

Do not take if your pregnant or breast feeding and let your doctor know if you are taking any other medicines before taking these as certain drugs react differently with each other and anything which treats sleeping problems, heart problems, low cholesterol or muscles relaxants have to be reported to the doctor before taking these.

When your taking Co-coda mol you should not drink and there is a dependency on these drugs if you have to take them for a long time so try and monitor your intake, I try and only take them when I feel server pain in my back at first after the accident I had to take them as prescribed for the pain as I could not move but now I am a little more mobile

Alternatives to NSAIDs for arthritis – Part 2

Though non-steroid anti-inflammatory agents or NSAIDs are the most commonly used agents for this purpose, relief to a person suffering from arthritis can come in a form other than NSAID too. Theses alternatives are important for all those who are unable to tolerate the side effects of NSAIDs, specially the gastric irritation caused by them.

For such persons, available options are medicines other than NSAIDs, alternative therapy and surgery.

I. MEDICINES FOR ARTHRITIS (OTHER THAN NSAIDs)

There are five major categories of medicine that can provide relief in arthritis. These include acetaminophen, opioid analgesics, steroids, disease modifying agents and biological response modifiers.

* ACETAMINOPHEN is the most commonly used non-NSAID pain reliever. Though primarily used to manage fever, it is an effective alternative for NSAIDs and can be used alone or in combination with other medicines.

* OPIOD ANALGESICS like CODEINE and DIAMORPHINE relieve pain by directly acting on the brain. They are useful in cases of severe pain, but also have a lot of side effects. They can cause dependence and also interfere in level of alertness. They are strict prescription drugs, to be used only in selective cases.

* STEROIDS act primarily by reducing the swelling of arthritis. They can not be used in long run, but can be fairly effective in short periods. They must not be stopped abruptly and need tapering of dose. Steroids also cause gastric irritation and must be used carefully with acid reducing agents.

* DISEASE MODIFYING ANTI-RHEUMATIC AGENTS or DMARDs are medicines that are useful in those types of arthritis that result from an abnormal immune system, like Rheumatoid Arthritis and Juvenile Arthritis. They modify the immune system and modify the process of disease itself. Medicines in this category include medicines like METHOTREXATE, SULFASALAZINE, PENICILLAMINE and AZATHIOPRINE.

* BIOLOGIC RESPONSE MODIFIERS interfere in the process of swelling of joint structures, by inhibiting the proteins which cause swelling, called ‘cytokines’. Different medicines in this category target different proteins. ETANERCEPT and INFLIXIMAB inhibit the ‘tumor necrosis factor’ while ANAKINRA inhibits ‘interluekin-1′. These medicines are now increasingly being used in long term and severe cases, but they are expensive and need to be given by injections.

II. OTHER MODES OF TREATMENT

Most of other modes of treatment need local application on the painful joints and

Lets be honest, for some people there will be no pain relief. Some forms of arthritis affect the body in a way that pain relief is not possible.
